Following the 2018 settlements from concussion litigations against the NHL, filmmaker Massimo Soto exposes the reality of head trauma in hockey and uncovers how the professional game has changed. Through interviews with Stanley Cup winning players, sports executives, Team USA's Physician and many others, the truth of professional hockey is cautiously uncovered. The Rink's Edge takes the viewer through the entire journey of NHL player's struggle with head trauma from beginning to present day likely revealing a lack of progress since 2018.
In 2013, players in both the NHL and NFL began speaking out about their head injuries as more players and teammates died of degenerative brain disorders. As the story progressed, more media outlets got involved and lawsuits were eventually pressed against the leagues. NFL & NHL players sued their respective leagues, claiming the league knew about the dangers and hid them in an effort to turn a profit from the spectacular hits that viewers loved. The NFL eventually came out in front of Congress admitting a certain connection between CTE and football.
The NHL denied any connection between playing professional hockey and CTE.
The Wind River Reservation is home to 27,000 Native Americans. The reservation is filled with a passion for basketball. In an effort to learn, create shared experiences and work on the basketball court restoration on the reservation, Mike Evans and his FCP team travel to Wyoming.
Countless problems exist on the reservation that go completely unspoken of. The goal of this film was to highlight the struggle and the strength behind the Natives living in Wyoming through the joint love of a sport. Basketball. Building a stronger bond between us and the natives through basketball was crucial and an important step in the right direction for all people living within the borders of the United States.
From driving into Wyoming from Salt Lake City to digitally polishing the beautiful colors of the reservation the film has taken nearly 9 months to complete in its entirety.
Massimo's role in the documentary consisted of filming, writing, directing and editing along side his friend and co-director Reece Weinberger. When not capturing cinematic footage, Massimo manually assisting the team in building the once rundown courts of the Reservation.
Filmmaker Massimo Soto journeys to the beaches of Costa Rica to uncover the severity of the sea level rise. In meeting with experts in numerous fields, he quickly learns that the extent of its effects are significantly worse than originally presumed.
In the 10 days Massimo spent in Costa Rica he interviewed close to 20 different experts in fields such as marine biology, national tourism, sustainability education. Each provided crucial insight into how a rise in the sea level could drastically impact their job, family and country.
